big surprise: my dad came to visit me

do you know that feeling when you wake up and think: "today is gonna happen something great!"? It was my last day of school and I should have been the opposite of happy because it would be my very last day going through the hallways, seeing my teacher and most of my classmates, opening my locker,... But I got up and was extremely cheerful... My mom gave Suzy and me a ride to the school and my class ate breakfast together... the last time all together... our teacher even sang a song for us... Then we got dressed in our gown and cap and our "graduation walk" started. First, we walked through the elementary and it was so sweet seeing all the cute little kids looking up to us and afterwards we walked through the high school... Walking out of the building I saw my mom and dad and I remember asking my sister why they're here, but honestly, small town and they're both working in the school... I didn't really think about it. And when I walked through the hallways, between my friends and smiling at all my friends standing in the door of their room, I just thought about how amazing my year was and I was sure that was the good thing happening on that day. But sometimes something much greater happens than we expect: I saw my dad!!!!!! He came all the way from Germany just to see me and get to know my new home! Nothing can describe how happy I was!!! Thank you so much, Dad, for coming to see me graduate! 💗

I LIVED my dream (Video)

today one year ago I started the most amazing, life-changing, and memorable 10 month of my life. I still remember the first weeks when every trip to the grocery market was super exciting, the biggest challenge of the day was to open my locker, and some talks could have been in Chinese as well because I didn't understand a word. But time flew by and people who were once just names on a sheet of paper became my family, people I just met became friends, and Michigan became my second home. Meine Gastfamilie

Und mit einem Schlag wird's Wirklichkeit: Ja, ich darf es nun endlich posten! Ich habe jetzt wirklich meine Gastfamilie bekommen -das Stadtkind Jean kommt auf ein kleines 100 Seelen Dorf. Für viele wäre das wohl der Weltuntergang, ich finde es jedoch super schön. Es ist einfach genau das was ich mir gewünscht habe, das komplette Gegenteil von meinem jetzigen Leben. Du kannst dir sicherlich vorstellen wie toll dieses Gefühl ist und wie sehr ich mich freue! Ich werde zusammen mit meiner ghanaischen Gastschwester bei einem älteren Ehepaar leben. Mitten im Kunstunterricht habe ich die Bestätigung von YFU bekommen und als ich dann zu Hause war, habe ich meiner Gastmom direkt eine E-Mail geschrieben. Ich habe ihr erzählt wie sehr ich mich freue und wie unendlich dankbar ich ihnen bin. Und sie hat auch sofort geantwortet. Die Nachricht, die ich bekomme habe, war so unglaublich süß. Dadurch hat sich irgendwie diese seltsame Barriere, die zwischen uns war, entfernt. Die Beiden klingen ...

how it is to get "home" after an exchange year

People often tell you how hard it is to go on exchange and start a new life... how to adapt to a new environment and how to find friends… but what do they say about the time after? Even though sometimes my time in the US seemed like eternity, time flew by and I always knew the day would come and I have to leave the life I just built. I had to leave the people that I love like my own family. I had to leave some of the most loving and caring friends I’ve ever had. I had to leave the little town that became my second home, my high school, and just every single thing I worked so hard to get within the year. But most of all, I had to leave the experience. Leaving your exchange year means it will NEVER be the same again. Sure you can come back and I will, but I’ll never open my locker again or celebrate homecoming. I can’t text my exchange friends, because they will still be all over the world. Even with my family, will it ever be the same again or just feel like a vis...
